We met Vera in her tenth decade on Earth, prowling the less-frequented back alleys of Rome in search of a decent bookstore. She invited us into a locals' only joint for an espresso, where everyone knew her name. 'I'd never go on a trip with old people,' she chuckled, as a tour bus full of seniors far younger than her rolled past. 'How boring!'
